Teenage Turbulence: Common Mental Health Concerns for Teens
Adolescence is a pivotal and often tumultuous period in a young person's life, and there are numerous reasons why teenagers may choose to seek therapy. They may grapple with mental health issues like depression or anxiety, confront the aftermath of traumatic events, or contend with the immense stress and anxiety brought on by academic demands and social expectations. Family conflicts, peer pressure, and bullying can give rise to self-esteem issues and emotional turmoil, while some may turn to therapy for support in overcoming substance abuse or body image concerns.
Adolescence is also a time of self-discovery, where teens may explore their identity and sexuality, necessitating a safe space to discuss and understand these issues. Coping with grief, isolation, anger, or aggression can further drive teens to seek therapy, as can addressing eating disorders or learning how to navigate major life changes and developmental transitions.
